2024 is the hottest year on record. With soaring temperatures, it’s not uncommon to see sweaty commuters looking for solace from the sun during their commute. Fortunately, JCDecaux bus shelters provide a service that’s as crucial as its ad space.

More than just advertising

For the first time in 1964, Jean-Claude Decaux set out to create a new standard of advertising that was not just an ad facing audiences but rather woven into the fabric of cities. With his idea of building bus shelters that were kept tidy and financed by the ads on the sides, he created a service to keep transit riders safe from the elements while creating a lucrative opportunity for advertisers to reach target urban dwellers.

Sixty years and eighty countries later, we continue to serve the citizens of our markets with necessities like shelter during commutes or digital panels providing crucial city information. It can be easy to overlook something as simple as a roof on a bus shelter as famous American researcher Don Norman once said, “Good design is actually a lot harder to notice than poor design, in part because good designs fit our needs so well that the design is invisible…”

As we develop future concepts of our street furniture design, we will remain committed to providing this vital service to the millions of daily bus riders who deserve safe and comfortable transit journeys.
